Goa is a India's smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population.Goa which is located on the western coast of India in the Konkan region, it is surrounded by Maharashtra state in the north side, and by Karnataka state from east and south, while Goas western coast is surrounded by Arabian Sea forms .Geographically Goas position is between the latitudes 15°48'00" North to 14°53'54" North and longitudes 74° 20'13" East to 73° 40'33" East.

The Panaji (Panjim )is the capital city of Goa , the largest city of Goa is Vasco da Gama (Vasco), while Margao city of Goa hold the historic importance that exhibits the influence of Portuguese culture in Goa. In the 15th century, Portuguese first landed in Goa and occupied it soon after. The Portuguese colony existed in Goa for about 450 years untill it was taken over by India in 1961.

Goa mostly knows for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture. It also has rich flora,fauna and wildlife, because of its location in the Western Ghats range, which is a biodiversity hotspot.Soon after liberation from Portuguese colony Goa was a made part of Union Territory of India,but on 30th May 1987 when it was given a status of separate state.

Goa is divided into two district namely North Goa and South Goa. North Goa headquarter is located at Panaji and South Goa has its headquarter in Margao city.

North Goa

North Goa district has an area of 1736 km², and is surrounded by Maharashtra state from north and east, by the Arabian Sea in the west.

Most of the current North Goa territories like Pernem, Bicholim, and Sattari were ruled by the Kingdom of Sawantwadi.Ponda city was sometimes ruled by Sunda Kingdom or Marathas or Kingdom of Sawantwadi. Hence these areas were seen as safe for the Hindu people who were living under continuous fear of the Portuguese Inquisition. In late 18th centuries these areas were conquered by Portuguese as part of New Conquest . These territories then remain under Portuguese rule till 1961.

The administrative headquarters of the district is Panaji, which is also the capital of the state of Goa. The district forms a part of greater region called Konkan. The district is divided into four subdivisions - Mapusa, Bicholim, Panaji, and Ponda; and six taluks, Pernem, Bardez (Mapusa), Bicholim, Sattari (Valpoy), Tiswadi (Panaji) and Ponda.

South Goa

South Goa district has an area of 1,966 km² and a population of 586,591 (2001 census). It is surrounded Karnataka state to the east and south, and by the Arabian Sea to the west.

The Portuguese established its colony in Goa way back in 1510, and expanded there colony to its current boundaries during the 17th and 18th centuries. Goa became part of India on December 19, 1961 after liberation from Portuguese rule. Goa and two other former Portuguese colony became the union territory of India, Daman and Diu, and Goa was organized into a single district in 1965. On 30 May 1987 Goa was given statehood , and Goa was reorganized into two separate districts, North Goa and South Goa.

The administrative headquarters of the South Goa district is located in Margao. The district is further divided into three subdivisions - Margao, Mormugao (Vasco), and Quepem; and six taluks, Mormugao, Salcete (Margao), Quepem, Canacona (Chaudi), Sanguem, and Dharbandora.
